The North Carolina coast is home to a number of military bases. The most famous is MCB Camp Lejeune and its satellite facilities. Another less well-known military facility is Camp Davis, located near Holly Ridge, North Carolina. Camp Davis is a part of the Greater Sandy Run Training Area and is a military use airport for servicemen and women from MCB Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River.

It was built in 1940 by the army for antiaircraft training, and expanded over time to include more than 45,000 acres. After World War II ended, Camp Davis became a training camp for the Marine Corps, but it was stirred into action in 1946 when the Navy assumed control of the camp for a guided missile testing program. After 1948, the camp again was closed. The town of Holly Ridge, located one mile to the north, has a longstanding relationship with the airfield.

Holly Ridge has grown with Camp Davis and is currently one of the smaller towns in the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town is roughly 1.4 square miles in total area, and its population as of 2010 was listed at just over 1,250 people. As Camp Davis expands or grows active, Holly Ridge may see growth as well, but for the time being the town is small and quaint.

Holly Ridge NC Services

Homebuyers looking for a small town atmosphere may find exactly what they are looking for in Holly Ridge Real Estate. There are three schools, one at each level, and a public co-ed softball league. The parks, pavilions, and athletic fields can all be rented by private parties, and are often used for cookouts, tournaments, and special events. The community center is very active, acting as a meeting place for church services on Sundays and Sylvan Learning throughout the week. The Holly Ridge Beauty Pageant will be held there in November, and many town council meetings take place in the community center when large space is required.

Holly Ridge NC Attractions

The history between Holly Ridge and Camp Davis is, for many Holly Ridge residents, family history. Scrapbook pictures of the time when Camp Davis was active can be found on the town's website, offering a glimpse of life almost 75 years ago. In 1943, at the peak of Camp Davis' activity during the war, Holly Ridge had a surging population of 110,000 residents. Today, the military history, the town’s proximity to MCB Camp Lejeune, and the nearness of the ocean are the three biggest aspects drawing visitors to Holly Ridge.
